It was a super battalion from the beginning. As far as I know we were the only battalion activated at Fort Sill that departed on their original deployment date. When we activated, we were given the date of July 24, 1967, for deployment. On July 24, 1967, we departed Fort Sill. At the reunion I'll talk a little bit about the activation of the 8/4th Arty. The best part is that the Battalion enjoyed an enviable reputation throughout its entire four years. I am eager to meet many of you members that made such a reputation possible.
When I received orders to activate this special battalion, I could not foresee the great service it would accomplish. Regardless of our feelings about the Vietnam war and the treatment we received from our nation, we can be proud that we served our country with pride and distinction. | |
